The Top Record of 2025: The Artist's Masterpiece Takes the Premier Place.

Initially, this work may look closer to an arduous scholarly challenge rather than the latest popular music project from a musician who just had a last single featured an international K-pop star. Split into 4 separate parts and performed in 13 languages, this is a head-spinning classical-tinged opus that delves into feminine mystery, religious transcendence, and physical transformation, frequently through the lens of different saintly figures. The dissolution of a romance—a topic handled with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—soars skyward here, supported by the constant sound of a major orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning composer within an extensive roll call of collaborators. Its sheer ambition by itself renders the efforts of contemporary artists appear rather small.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

The fact that this album succeeds in escape overly academic posturing is almost miraculous, and full credit going to Rosalía. Although this is not her first project to alchemize historical sounds and modern styles, the ambitions feel far higher on Lux, and the tightrope walk far more precarious. What truly raises this fourth album, beyond its multilayered tunes, rich arrangements, and engrained theatricality, proves to be a core sense of joy. Similar to the legendary artist at her peak, you find a wondrous sense to Rosalía's voice which sweeps the listener up in its whirlwind. When she is breaking hearts in two, you nevertheless desire to be right there through the ride.

A Signature Moment of Joy

This exuberant energy shines brightly on a stunning piano-led song inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool over several moments. Suddenly, all the music falls silent, to reveal there's a spontaneous giggle and a comment prior to a comically exaggerated orchestral crescendo crashes down with cartoonish impact. The track then shifts to the frenetic track featuring racing strings, a powerful choral group, and a surprise role from none other than herself.

"The charm with this album lies in the listener never exactly know—or even want to know—what it is going next."

Nearly every track ends in a totally different place than how it began. A track examines the transient nature of fame with a delicate symphony only to collapsing into digital chaos. Another, a song that recalls her previous trap-infused style begins off moody and sinister, with prowling vocals, until fluttering traditional rhythms and an angelic chorus enter to smooth its jagged corners.

The Balance Between Art and Pop

A key achievement of Lux involves straddling the gap of radical innovation and mainstream accessibility. This is little coincidence that the album has achieved her first release to break into the upper reaches of key markets: at its core a collection of truly catchy pop songs. One track sung entirely in English builds around a refrain that feels to collect more and more infectious melodies while it spirals skyward. This trick is repeated on another powerful track that grows and contracts, weaving layered melodies like a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like song charms with its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares with cultural impact of contemporary breakup songs, eviscerating a former lover described as an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the singing have a sharp edge, akin to a storybook character hiding a knife: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You've won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Soul

This album represents popular music on a grand level, an ambitious reach for high Art amid of looming artificial blankness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of sublime transcendence, creating a dramatic spectacle that masterfully controls its own built-in excess. This is an abundant well of buried treasure that takes time to completely mine but doesn't seem like a chore. Where other major pop albums of the year felt like feasting on scraps, this record is a sumptuous feast where the characters around it, perhaps tipsy on holy wine, flutter between discussions about ancient figures, the profound sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and common stories about useless men. It is a contemporary theatrical production from music's truly restlessly inventive visionary.
