In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Discussions Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several major political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
