Conservative responses to the partial release of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive redactions portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department officials defended the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter describing the redaction procedure.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While the former president's name and likeness appear in some of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt serious questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. A number of Republicans immediately demanded greater openness.
“People are furious and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the law, and implied that a future legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s document release grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the act,” he added.
Some Conservative Figures Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, some conservative commentators and Trump allies came out strongly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are entirely redacted, and many of the men shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
Yet a few are not, including prominent figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, enabled some conservative voices to go on the attack.
“It’s pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely accused Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement
Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House has not been hiding those documents for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and conceal forever. So they can release as many grainy decades-old photos as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Overall Rightwing Comment Remains Muted
However, overall comment on the political right was relatively muted following the release, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for action that came before the congressional approval to enact a law requiring the documents' release.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a complete release. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative influencers were given physical binders of files that contained little previously unseen data.
